When Amy throws a party to prove how great she's doing post-divorce, she's forced to enlist Dina and Jonah's help, and Dina ends up making the ultimate sacrifice. Glenn and his wife Jerusha are forced to conduct some personal business at Amy's home.
Plot[]
In the Break Room, Jonah, Mateo and Garrett are placing bets on what will happen at that evening's Golden Globe Awards. Justine asks where they'll be watching the Awards and Amy is surprised as she always hosts a party for it. Dina figures that Amy wouldn't host due to her divorce and Mateo believes Amy's life is in a shambles. Amy assures everyone her life is fine, that she'll host and will be BBQing. To Amy's surprise, Dina shows up for the party three hours early to help and is her usual condescending self towards Amy's appearance and the state of Amy's house. Kelly and Jonah arrive at Amy's house with Kelly feeling that she is over-dressed and isn't accepted by the staff yet. Jonah reassures her but Dina insults Kelly's dress.
Amy cloyingly asks Garrett and Mateo if they are having a good time and insists they call the party drinks by names she's made for them from TV and other cultural references. Justine can't parallel park her car. (♫ Rae Sremmurd – No Flex Zone ♫) Glenn introduces Amy to his wife Jerusha who hugs Amy and tells her that people are usually happier after a divorce. She then presents Amy with a needlepoint of a hummingbird which she does for many people using an animal that represents their personality. Glenn mentions they need to leave early as they are trying to have a baby. The drink table with the cultural names is displayed. (♫ Everything – Hooch ♫) Kelly tries to bond with Dina, Garrett and Mateo but doesn't know any of the famous commercials they are referring to and ends up alienating herself.
Amy checks on the BBQ but discovers to her horror that the propane ran out and the meat is raw. She asks for Jonah's help, leaving Kelly alone with Dina, Garrett and Mateo. She pretends to know the new commercial they reference. Jonah tells Amy to not worry about the food as everyone is there to watch the Golden Globes. Mateo interrupts them with news that the TV isn't working. Garrett can't fix the TV so Mateo asks Amy to call Adam for help but she refuses. Mateo wants to leave but Sandra arrives with Jerry who clearly shouldn't be out of the hospital. Justine still can't park her car. (♫ Birdman – Dark Shades ♫) In the kitchen, Amy tells Dina and Jonah that she's going to microwave the meat and tries to convince them that the party is going fine. Jerusha introduces herself to Kelly, tells her she's dressed like a prostitute and says she's going to make her a squirrel.
Everyone's impatience with the lack of food and TV bubbles over and they want to leave but Amy stops them. The meat is cooking in the microwave. (♫ Ice Cube – You Can Do It ♫) Amy stops Glenn and his wife Jerusha from leaving (as they want to make a baby) by convincing Glenn to use her bedroom for sex. Dina tries to interest everyone in games no one has heard of until Jonah has Kelly explain a game called "Answers". The game is confusing to everyone except Jerry. Mateo and Garrett have had enough and lead everyone in leaving. Dina stands up and yells that everyone has to stay, stop complaining and have fun. Everyone sits down in silence and banging noises can be heard coming from Amy's bedroom. Justine has given up trying to park her car which is blocking a lane so she sits inside it eating and waves a car around her. (♫ Future – Poa ♫)
Everyone feels like hostages and Garrett pleads for someone to talk loudly and drown out the sounds of sex coming from Amy's bedroom. Jerry mentions that he met God. In the kitchen, Amy, Dina and Jonah scramble to get the food ready. Amy pours BBQ sauce over the microwaved meat to which Dina and Jonah can barely contain their disgust. A dishevelled Glenn and Jerusha exit Amy's bedroom and make an excuse that they were fixing a table leg. Joanna steals a picture frame. (♫ Curtis Mayfield - Superfly ♫) Jerusha leads a prayer before the meal which subtlety refers to the sex she and Glenn just had. Amy says to dig in but the sight of the meat puts everyone off. Garrett and Sandra make excuses that they'd rather start with buns and coleslaw so Amy bites into a piece of chicken. Her reaction to the taste isn't encouraging.
Dina tries to save the day by trying a chicken leg even though she is a vegan and a bird lover. She lies that it tastes good but soon after is in the bathroom. Amy admits that the party is a bust and her life is in shambles. Glenn, Sandra and Jerusha encourage Amy with stories of others who are worse off than her. Amy says her goodbyes to everyone at the door and apologies. Glenn and Jerusha take the sheets from Amy's bed to wash. Kelly is overjoyed when Garrett and Mateo invite her to a restaurant to watch the Golden Globes after parties. She in turn invites Amy who makes excuses that she has to stay home. Jonah makes jokes of the party problems with Amy. In the street, the staff pass by Justine who is asleep in her car with half-eaten food and empty bottles. (♫ Nazareth – Love Hurts ♫) Amy gets her TV working just as Dina appears from the bathroom in a bath robe having taken a shower. Amy thanks her for her help.
Mateo wonders if the relationship between Jonah and Kelly is a Mannequin situation.
As everyone becomes impatient with the lack of TV and food at Amy's, P.F. Chang's is mentioned as a destination.
Amy thought that Natalie Portman looked like a banana at the previous year's Golden Globes.
Jerusha tries to comfort Amy with a story of a tragedy in which a woman from her church divorced, married a man from Facebook who took her money and the story ended up on Dateline.
Goof: An outside shot of the front of Amy's house shows a window on each side of the front door. However, an inside shot of the living room in which the front door can be seen has no window. Also, how did Garrett get up and down the front steps?
