Yeah, and then I get to endure the most gruesome pain imaginable. The phrase "cut from hole to hole" was said to me.

— Dina

"Gender Reveal" is the twentieth episode of Season Three of Superstore, and the fifty-second episode of the show overall.

Summary[]

The store hosts a gender reveal party for Glenn and his wife Jerusha, just as Dina is freaking out at the realities of having to deliver a baby. Amy receives some unsettling news.

Plot[]

S03E20-Ultrasound

It's real Dina!

At the obstetrician's office, Glenn and Jerusha marvel at the ultrasound of the baby Dina is carrying for them. Dina is uninterested and watches a video on her phone until the doctor shows the baby in 4D. The baby's face is clearly visible which shocks Dina. In the Break Room, Glenn and Jerusha show the ultrasound to the staff. Glenn has the sex of the baby in an envelope and is about to open it but the staff have various ideas how the gender should be revealed including Cheyenne wanting a paint ball game. Sandra mentions that Jerry's family attended his catheter removal. Dina expresses distress about the life inside her which prompts Justine to make one of her typical sexual jokes. In the store, Amy and Jonah watch Glenn and Jerusha and make jokes in an Italian accent about Amy's life is she'd been born a boy. Marcus does an impression which he gets wrong.

S03E20-Kelly Sandra baby pinata

Why do you sound like a cartoon mouse?

Dina hears horror stories about child birth from two customers capped by Janet mentioning that she gave birth to twins in the back of car and was cut open. For the gender reveal party, Kelly hands assignments to the staff including having Sandra make a melon baby. Jeff, now sporting a moustache, surprises Mateo and maintains the ruse with Jonah that he's working for Target. Jeff leaves to shop and Mateo tells Jonah that Jeff is jobless. In Glenn's Office, Glenn is tempted to open the envelope so he gives it to Garrett with orders not to tell him the contents. After watching a horrible video of an animal birth, Dina tells Amy (who is eating many twinkies) and Glenn that she doesn't want to carry the baby anymore. In Glenn's Office, she panics and offers inane ideas of how to rid herself of the baby. Kelly and Sandra ask Garrett for the envelope so they can put the correct color of jelly beans in a piñata baby but Garrett can't find the envelope and won't admit to losing it.

S03E20-Amy name tag and cafe

It doesn't hurt that much.

Jeff continually talks about Target to Jonah which prompts him to ask Jeff to tone down the work talk. Jeff figures out that Jonah knows his ruse and Mateo discusses this with Jonah. Mateo doesn't want to ask Jeff to find a job (as Jeff quit Cloud 9 for Mateo) so Jonah offers to. Garrett calls the obstetrician's office to find out the sex of the baby and fakes Glenn's high voice. The office doesn't believe he's Glenn angering Garrett as he believes his impression was spot on. At Coffee & Bakery, Dina expresses her child birth fears to Amy (who is wolfing down nachos) and Cheyenne. Amy downplays the pain and Cheyenne tries to. Jonah finds Jeff talking to Mateo and encourages him to find a job. Jeff wants to find what makes him happy which Mateo supports and so Jonah relents. In private, Mateo is angry at Jonah as Jonah was supposed to be the "bad cop" and insist on Jeff finding a job. Amy mentions that she thought she was pregnant and evokes the wonders of having a baby. Dina points out there was a recall on the pregnancy test kit Amy used which causes her to leave with concern.

S03E20-Jeff hiking gear Mateo

Kapow! Truth bomb!

In the Break Room, Amy sits in front of many positive pregnancy tests. She admits she doesn't want a baby while Cheyenne starts to make a whiteboard list of who could be the father including Alex and Tate. Amy admits it was her ex Adam. In the Warehouse, Garrett has several staff searching through the trash for the envelope. In hiking gear, Jeff approaches Jonah and Mateo. Jonah forcefully tells Jeff he needs to stop dreaming and get a job while Mateo play acts supporting Jeff. Amy tries unsuccessfully to leave a voice mail for Adam until Sandra interrupts her with a cart of fruit babies. Mateo continues to tie into Jonah but Jeff stops him and gives in to getting a job. He is so despondent that when Jonah keeps playing "bad cop", Mateo asks him to stop and Jonah relents. In private, Mateo is angry again at Jonah for not playing his role. In the Break Room, Elias adds his name to a whiteboard list of those who would like to sleep with Amy. (♫ Nine Days - Absolutely (Story of a Girl) ♫)

S03E20-Garrett party speech

What is gender anyways?

Glenn asks Amy for advice on baby gifts for the party which pushes Amy's anxiety over the edge. Dina catches Amy trying to clock out and sympathizing with her situation, ushers her out of the store. At the party, Mateo watches Jeff in a fishing hat talk to Cheyenne and rues their economic down turn. (♫ The Tokens - The Lion Sleeps Tonight ♫) Glenn starts to make an announcement but Jerusha notices Dina is absent, much to Garrett's relief so Glenn postpones the reveal. Dina drives Amy around in her truck and asks Amy several personal questions which Amy doesn't want to discuss. Amy makes it clear she doesn't want an abortion. Glenn can't wait and cuts the cake. Everyone's disappointed that the filling doesn't reveal the baby gender. Sandra says Garrett was supposed to take care of the reveal but when Glenn questions him, Garrett admonishes everyone for defining the baby by its sex in order to deflect attention away from him losing the envelope.

S03E20-Amy Jonah kiss

At last.

Amy bemoans that she won't be able to do all the things she wants now that she's pregnant. Dina tells her people can always find an excuse to not do what they want. A man tries out a breast pump. (♫ Twisted Sister - The Price ♫) Amy meets Jonah in the Warehouse cleaning up the trash. (♫ David Bowie - Rebel Rebel ♫) Jonah jokingly repeats the Italian accent from earlier but Amy looks deep into his eyes and moves closer. She kisses him and he responds tenderly. Amy pulls back and with tears in her eyes, tells Jonah that she's pregnant.

  • Amy references Episode 12 of the same season "Groundhog Day" when she talks about her and Tate and how they didn't end up having sex because he got embarrassed and left after failing to do a one-armed pushup. This retcons that episode's plot, in which, to prove to everyone that she is a 10 (because she is over 30, is divorced, and has a kid, she's currently only a little higher than Justine, who is a 3), Amy does sleep with Tate, who is a 10 (because he has a good job and abs).
