Season: Three — Episode: 19 Director: Ben Feldman — Writer: Vanessa Ramos — Aired: April 12, 2018 — Viewers (millions): 3.08 Summary: As lottery mania sweeps the store, Dina incentivizes the employees to sell as many tickets as possible. Jonah helps Amy track down the new district manager to lobby for a raise.
There are some people who say the lottery is basically a tax on lower income, less educated people. But you know who doesn't say that? People who win the lottery!
In the Break Room, Glenn announces that the Missouri Lottery jackpot is the most it has been in 20 years. Marcus, Garrett and Amy share their selfish lottery dreams while Mateo and Cheyenne would both buy an island. Jonah would travel but he doesn't mention bringing Kelly so Marcus claims dibs on her. After Dina's dream, Sandra relates a wonderful philanthropic activity she's involved with that she'd give her winnings to. This guilts the staff into back-tracking on their dreams and mentioning how they'd be unselfish too. In the store, Jonah sees Amy in a business suit and discovers she plans on asking Glenn for a raise. Amy is reluctant so Jonah encourages her. While picking lottery numbers, Cheyenne and Mateo agree to buy their tickets together so they can remain friends if they win.
Sandra shows the way.
While stocking produce, Kelly playfully gives Jonah a hard time for not mentioning her in his lottery fantasy. He tries to explain but this evokes teasing from Kelly. While stocking a toilet aid, Amy nervously tries to ask Glenn for a raise but is interrupted by a customer with a question on the aid. Dina receives a text from an employee at another Cloud 9 store concerning lottery ticket sales which fuels her competitive spirit. Everything supportive thing Sandra says to Dina is shot down by her leaving Sandra confused. As more customers join the conversation on the toilet aid, Amy blurts out that she wants a raise. Glenn tells her that only Laurie can give raises. At Coffee & Bakery, Cheyenne and Mateo ponder whether to get lottery winnings in installments and fantasize about who'd they invite on a yacht if they win the lottery. Amy tells Jonah about her failure with Glenn so Jonah encourages Amy to talk to Laurie.
So I'm dead in your fantasies?
Sandra watches as Garrett shows disinterest and rudeness to a customer who can't decide on what lottery numbers to pick and leaves without buying one. She tattles to Dina. In Glenn's Office, Amy calls Laurie to ask for a raise but gets her secretary, Skye. Skye says Laurie isn't available and Jonah accuses her of lying which makes her cry. When Amy indicates she's calling for a raise, Skye says Laurie has a protocol for this. In the Break Room, Glenn gives a Cloud 9 personal budgeting session to the staff. A woman weighs a baby in the produce weighing scale. (♫ Kool & the Gang - Ladies' Night ♫) The staff point out to Glenn that there's no line items for food, child or medical care while Marcus encourages staff to buy one lobster to be eaten a little each day over two weeks. Jonah plans dinner and watching one of Kelly's favorite TV shows which she cheerfully gets him to admit is making up for not including her in his lottery fantasy.
$4 a day for food?!
The budgeting session focuses on how to save money which includes Marcus saying he pees in the shower, Dina gathering loose change and Cheyenne mentioning a friend who makes money with a live webcam in her home. Amy asks why the company can't just pay everyone more. Glenn responds with Cloud 9 advice on the use of social services. Jonah discovers through Laurie's social media that she's playing golf. Jonah talks Amy into going to the golf course and asking Laurie for a raise. She agrees but insists he come along. After Dina watches Garrett turn away a lottery customer, she uses Sandra to trick him into giving better service by lying that the seller of a winning ticket gets $5000. Garrett isn't convinced but starts selling briskly. As Cheyenne and Mateo continue to talk about their dream yacht, Sandra tells them they wouldn't win as much as they think due to taxes and other factors which disappoints them.
Only $5.5 million?
At the golf course in a cart, Amy and Jonah search for Laurie with Amy driving very slowly. Jonah talks about his past which included golfing, tennis and skiing. They see Laurie in the distance and creep slowly towards her. A huge line-up of lottery players has formed in front of Garrett. Glenn discovers Myrtle in the line-up. She tells Glenn that her new job is collecting cans for which she has to get up at 3:00am. He offers her $30 for the cans and she hopes she wins the lottery as she's living in a motel and running out of money. At the course, Jonah gives Amy some funny golf segues to asking for a raise. As they pursue Laurie, it takes them down a hill. The cart picks up speed and unable to control it, Amy runs into Laurie. A paramedic arrives and advises Laurie that although nothing appears broken, she should remain prone until help arrives. Against Jonah's advice, Amy asks for a raise from an incredulous Laurie.
I got a job collecting trash.
You're asking for a raise right now?
The staff and customers watch the lottery draw on the store's TVs. Sandra tells Dina that they sold the most lottery tickets and as suspected, Garrett finds out there was no bonus for selling a winning ticket. No one at the store wins and Garrett realizes he turned away a customer with the winning numbers. Cheyenne and Mateo mask their disappointment. At a putting green at night, Amy and Jonah drink beer and Jonah kids Amy about her failed raise attempt. (♫ José González - Heartbeats ♫) Amy misses hitting the ball so Jonah moves closer to instruct her. He holds Amy from behind and misses a call from Kelly on his phone. Kelly leaves a cheerful message for him about their restaurant reservation which Jonah has forgotten. Amy sinks her putt and she and Jonah revel in her victory.
Do the right thing Jonah.
