Richard is Mateo's immigration lawyer who comes to Cloud 9 alongside Mateo's aunt, Irma Liwanag, in order to collect testimonies from the staff to help Mateo's bond hearing and his case against deportation. He is portrayed by actor Jerry Minor.
Character History[]
Amy meets Richard and Irma in the front of the store as Richard explains he needs testimonies that prove that Mateo is a good person that deserves to be out on bond. Richard also mentions that Amy and the rest of staff don't need to be under oath for their testimonies, which leads Amy to tell the rest of the staff to exaggerate stories of Mateo being an inspiring and empathetic person. Even with the exaggerated stories, Richard admits it's still not enough to support Mateo's bond hearing.
In the Café, Richard is about to leave after Jeff gives his testimony, and Jeff and Amy argue. Jeff brings up that the store trying to unionize is what caused the ICE raid that lead to Mateo's arrest. ("Employee Appreciation Day") After hearing this, Richard interrupts and informs them that ICE isn't allowed to do worksite enforcement during a labor dispute, which gives Mateo's case enough credence to where he can be released under monitorization by ICE.
